Four parts: the world of opinions and beliefs, the war among religions, the fanaticism of the materialists, and respect for all religions
Tap a part to go to it.
Every word here is his. Nothing has been paraphrased, joined or improved. Each passage
was cut out of the book it belongs to by reference and carries that book and the paragraph
it came from. Where he was speaking rather than writing, it also carries the name of the
lecture, with the place and year where the volume records them, so anything on this page can
be found again in the source.
He places fanaticism in the reasoning mind.“Pistis is the world of opinions and beliefs.” And he
is plain about where it leads: “It is absurd to suppose that the Superman can result from beliefs, theories, sectarianism, fanaticism, schools etc.”“Fanaticism tends to be external, while cynicism becomes internal.”
The mind that holds it is caught: “our intelligence becomes bottled up inside of distinct dogmas and theories”.
The second part is the fanatic of the temple. The school that is the only true one, the
anathema, the sanctimonious who would excommunicate a saint for a piece of meat:
“This is the sanctimonious type, always fanatic, always afraid, always a fornicator.” Its fruit is war and the bonfire:
“There is not a reason that justifies religious wars because all religions teach the same principles.”
The third part is the fanatic of the laboratory. He says that “fanaticism is the worst enemy of reasoning and logic”,
and he finds it among the learned too: “The sectarian materialists, who do not see beyond dogmatic procedures, look like the caterpillar that believes that the leaf where it lives is the whole.”
The last part is what takes its place.“The Gnostic must not be a fanatic.” Study without
prejudice, tolerance with its limit (“a virtue, however beautiful it may be, beyond a certain point, turns into vice, into defect.”), and a plain rule:
“Respect the religion of your neighbour.” He ends where every religion meets:
“Religions are precious pearls strung on the golden thread of Divinity.”

9 passages
IBeliefs, theories, sectarianism, fanaticism
Fanaticism set among the states of the reasoning mind: opinion, belief, theory and sect, none of them a direct perception of the truth and none able to produce the Superman. He pairs outward fanaticism with inward cynicism, and shows the religious fanatic and the materialist swinging into each other on the pendulum.
Pistis is the world of opinions and beliefs. Pistis is belief, prejudices, sectarianism, fanaticism, theories in which there does not exist any type of direct perception of the Truth. Pistis is the consciousness of the common level of humanity.
The Perfect Matrimony, 1950 (ed. 1966)
The second of such states corresponds exactly to all reasoning process: opinions, fanatic sectarianism, etc., etc., etc.
The Three Mountains, 1972
Sexual Yoga, Maithuna, the Arcanum A.Z.F. (Sexual Magic) is a type of suprasexual function that in fact modifies the secondary sexual characteristics producing a new type of man, a Superman. It is absurd to suppose that the Superman can result from beliefs, theories, sectarianism, fanaticism, schools etc. Really, the Superman does not come from what one believes or ceases to believe, or from the school with which we are affiliated, or from the school we cease to belong to. The secondary sexual characteristics are only modified bychang ing the primary characteristics. With sexual yoga, with Maithuna, the authentic yogi initiates are able to modify the secondary sexual characteristic in a positive, transcendental, divine form.
The Perfect Matrimony, 1950 (ed. 1966)
Norms, procedures, no matter how wise they might be, if they are trapped inside this or that fanatism, in this or that prejudice, in this or that concept, can be an obstacle for us in the progress towards SUPER-MAN. SUPER-MAN knows the good in evil and the evil in good; grasps the sword of cosmic justice and is beyond good and evil.
The Great Rebellion, 1975
Without question each head is a world on its own. In each and every one of us, a kind of pontifical, dictatorial dogmatism exists which wants to make us believe in absolute equality of concept and reality. No matter how strong the structures of reasoning may be, nothing can guarantee absolute equality between concept and reality.
The Great Rebellion, 1975
These are in synthesis the dualistic manifestations of these tenebrous vibrations. Fanaticism tends to be external, while cynicism becomes internal. Behold here the two sides of the same coin: the obverse and the reverse.
Christmas Messages, 1952–66
The Poisoninioskirian Vibrations produce in people a high degree of fanaticism and expert cynicism. These types of people were abundant among the Great Inquisitors, for example, Tomas of Torquemada During many years of observation and experience; we have proven that the tenebrous Poisoninioskirian Vibrations have the power of awakening the Abominable Kundartiguador Organ.
The Solar Bodies, 1968
At the right side of the pendulum can be placed the various religions, sects, pseudoesoteric and pseudo-occultist schools. At the left side of the pendulum's movement can be placed all the schools of materialist type, Marxist, Atheist, Scepticist, etc. Which are the antithesis of pendular movement, changeable, subject to incessant permutation. The religious fanatic, due to any unusual event or disappointment, can move to the other extreme of the pendulum, becoming an atheist, a materialist, a sceptic.
The Great Rebellion, 1975
Due to any unusual incident, perhaps a metaphysical or transcendental event or a moment of indescribable terror, a materialistic and atheistic fanatic can shift to the opposite extreme of the pendulum's motions and become an unbearably religious reactionary. Example: a priest defeated by the polemics of an esotericist, in desperation became incredulous and materialistic.

IIOur intelligence becomes bottled up inside of distinct dogmas and theories
An intelligence shut inside a dogma or a theory can only think according to its bottle. Believer and scholar alike appear here imprisoned in beliefs and ancestral prejudices, petrified in old theories, and sure they hold the final word.
To ignore these fundamental postulations of Gnosticism is very serious, because the result of such an attitude is that our intelligence becomes bottled up inside of distinct dogmas and theories, which are sometimes enchanting and fascinating, yet, absurd and stupid when we truly examine them in the light of the Tertium Organum (the third cannon of thought).
Runic Magic, 1969
The mind of the believer is bottled in the belief and this is not the experience of That which is the Truth, God, Allah, or whatever one wants to call it. The mind of the atheist is embottled in incredulity and neither is this the experience of That which is the truth, God, Brahma, etc, etc. The mind of the one who doubts the existence of God is bottled in skepticism and this is not the truth.
Christmas Messages, 1952–66
In this day and age, the human mind is already so degenerated that it has become incapable of even comprehending the inverse degenerative process on a greater scale. Present Erudites’ minds are so trapped (bottled up within the Dogma of Evolution) that their minds only know how to think or function according to their own bottled up condition. This is why they attribute unto the other phenomena (that is, devolution, destruction, decadence and degeneration) the qualification of Evolution, Development and Progress.
The Solar Bodies, 1968also in Evolution, Involution, Revolution, The Mind
Death has many meanings, both positive and negative, Let us consider the magnificent observation of the Great Kabir Jesus the Christ: “Let the dead bury their dead.” Many people, although alive, are in fact dead to all possible work upon themselves and therefore to any inner transformation, They are people imprisoned in their dogmas and beliefs, people petrified in memories of many yesterdays, individuals fully of ancestral prejudices, persons who are the slave of what others might say, horribly lukewarm, indifferent and sometimes “know it all ignoramuses” who are convinced that they are right because that is what they were told, etc.
Treatise of Revolutionary Psychology, 1975
Many brothers of the path affiliate themselves to teachings that do not understand the mystery of Christ. These are people who are petrified within theories of the past century, people full of horrible fanaticism and fear; they do not accept anything new and believe that they have won the final word in the knowledge; they have pride and haughtiness, fanaticism and terrible fear. They are people who end up exploiting the Christ with good intentions.

IMy school is the best
Sects and schools that forbid, threaten, excommunicate and go looking for proselytes. The conviction that one's own school and religion alone are good is named a false wealth, and the anathemas he himself received are laid to ignorance and lack of study.
The feeling that my school is the best and my neighbors school is worthless; that my Religion is the only authentic one and that all others religions are false and perverse; that such a fellows spouse is a lousy spouse and that mine is a saint; that my friend Robert is a drunkard, yet, I am wise and abstemious, etc., is what makes us feel rich. That is the reason why we are all the “camels” of the biblical parable in relation to the Esoteric Work.
Treatise of Revolutionary Psychology, 1975
Schools have already given all they had to offer. The centers of knowledge are now converted to business places, each with its tyrant that forbids its adepts and students to go out in search of knowledge; the prohibitions here, the excommunications and threats there, always leaving things for tomorrow, making a big issue out of the password, the protective amulet, the non-plus-ultra..., of the secrets that no other school possesses. We are not looking for flatterers of masters nor are we interested in hard-hearted henchmen. We are guiding pillars, so do not become attached to us because our mission is not to gather up followers. We indicate with logical thought and exact concept the path to follow so that each person arrives at his Internal Master, he who lives in silence within each of you. We inform you that knowledge belongs to the Inner Self and that virtues and gifts are not a matter of false pretense and false humility but that they are terrible realities, that convert us into powerful and gigantic oaks so that the frailties of the mind, the threats of black magicians, the envy of tyrants can shatter against our strong personality.
Zodiacal Course, 1951
If the devotees had full consciousness of the Christic gospel preached by the Great Kabir Jesus, it is obvious that so many sects would not exist; truly there would be only one Christic religion of a universal cosmic type. However, the believers are not able to agree among themselves because they have their consciousness asleep; they know nothing. Nothing is evident to them. They have never personally talked with an Angel; they have never consciously and positively entered the celestial regions. They walk because others walk, eat because others eat, talk because others talk, and in this manner they proceed from the cradle to the sepulcher with blindfolded eyes.

Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows’ houses, and for a pretense make long prayer, therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation” Referring to so many false apostles that wander about founding diverse sects that never lead to the final liberation, the Great Kabir Jesus says: “Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to in one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of bell than yourselves.”

The attacks, of which we have been victims, the persecutions, anathemas, excommunications etc., are due to ignorance and lack of study. The synthesis enriches every religious form or esoteric system. The synthesis can harm no one. This is the Doctrine of the Synthesis. We deeply love all religious forms; we know that they are the loving manifestation of the Great Cosmic Universal Religion.
The fanatic inside the aspirant: horrified at everything, ready to excommunicate whoever eats meat or drinks a glass of wine, and cruel at home. Against it stands the plain rule that we should not be fanatics, and the fanatic's disorder is traced to superstitious fear.
Esoteric discipline is very demanding. We should not confuse sanctity with sanctimoniousness. The human type of sanctimonious person has filled the world with tears. The sanctimonious fanatic becomes horrified at everything. When a tenebrous, sanctimonious person saw the Mexican sculpture of the Bat God, he said that was black magic. For the sanctimonious person, even the most divine things are black magic. Master Litelantes was criticized by the spiritualist sisters because she did not partake of their hypocrisy. Sanctimonious women hated her because she did not share their parrot chatter, those who talk but not do, and speak of what they do not know. The sanctimonious person only lives visiting from school to school, like a butterfly, and always seated in comfortable armchairs. The sanctimonious person hates sexual magic and lives always filled with fear.
The Greater Mysteries, 1956also in Hypocrisy
The sanctimonious person enjoys theories and believes himself to be of the kingdom of supermen. The sanctimonious person is so imbecile that he would dare to excommunicate a Ghandi, or a Jesus Christ, if he was to surprise them eating a piece of meat. This is the sanctimonious type, always fanatic, always afraid, always a fornicator.
The Greater Mysteries, 1956also in Hypocrisy
Not all those who fabricate a superior ‘I’ fall into mythomania; fanatics abound who are not mythomaniacs and they only aspire to evolve in order to achieve the union with the superior ‘I’. Those fanatics do not eat a piece of meat, or drink a glass of wine and terribly criticise all those who eat a tiny piece of meat or have a cup of wine in their hands ready to make a toast. These fanatics are unbearable, they are commonly one hundred percent vegetarian, they consider themselves very holy, but at home they are cruel with their wife, with their children, etc. These people are delighted with fornication, adultery, covetous, ambition; but, they consider themselves very holy.

Nevertheless we should not be fanatics. Whoever is incapable of taking a glass in hospitality is as weak as he who does not know how to control his drinking, and becomes drunk. Fornication is another thing. This is unpardonable. All those who ejaculate the seminal fluid are fornicator them, for the fornicators, is the abyss and the second death. Man can be in everything, but should not be victim of anything. He should be king and not slave. He who partook of a drink did not commit a crime, but he who was a slave and victim of drink; he has committed a crime. The true Master is king of the Heavens, the Earth and the Infernos. The weak are not kings. The weak are slaves.

IIIThe harm which they did to others
What fanaticism leaves behind it. Religious wars and the branding of others as heretics are called absurd, and the father who taught religion with beatings, the souls in remorse after death and the Inquisitors in the fire they lit show where it ends.
There is not a reason that justifies religious wars because all religions teach the same principles. The witch in Mid-Africa and the Archbishop in the Metropolitan Cathedral of Rome or London are based on the same marvelous force of the cosmic Religion; the principles are the same, the only thing which varies is the religious form. Therefore, the fratricidal struggle among diverse religions is absurd.
Christmas Messages, 1952–66
There is no reason that justifies religious wars like those of Ireland. It is absurd to classify others as unfaithful, heretics or pagans, because of the simple fact of their not belonging to our religion.
The Revolution of the Dialectic
It is also not strange to find in the sixth submerged infradimensional region, heads of households that were very honest and sincere but also terribly mistaken; what they should have done they did not do; and what they should not have done, they did. Some of these men were extraordinarily fanatic in the world where they lived and with sticks and beatings they taught religion to their children, as if the latter could be learned with whippings.
Yes, There Is a Hell, a Devil and Karma, 1973
Those souls which never had any kind of religion, materialistic souls, feel out of place there, like chickens in an unfamiliar barnyard. They suffer unspeakably. Those who were delirious and fanatical about religious matters feel immense remorse for their evil deeds because they understand the harm which they did to others. They suffer unspeakably.

IFanaticism is the worst enemy of reasoning and logic
University learning is no protection. Pride in theories read makes the intellectual an intolerable fanatic, science makes dogmas of the atom and of hallucination, and the one who is fanatical about the intellect stays trapped in the senses.
With no doubt, fanaticism is the worst enemy of reasoning and logic; however, people from universities also fall into fanaticism.
Endocrinology & Criminology, 1957
When people from the universities laugh at clairvoyants and at convulsive-ecstatic crisis, when we believe that all the visions that are seen during one of those crisis are hallucinations, madness, etc., etc., by dint of pride, we fall into the state of fanaticism and ignorance. Our fanaticism is hallucinated by the theories that we have read and by the intellectual principles with which we mold our intellect.

We are not the masters of knowledge. Therefore, convulsive and pathologic intellectual suggestion can convert an intellectual into an intolerable fanatic.
Endocrinology & Criminology, 1957
Biology cannot underestimate the peyote nor assure in a dogmatic and intransigent way that clairvoyant perceptions are hallucinations. Similarly, if the first sages who were able to see germs with the microscope were told and assured that such germs did not exist, that what they were seeing through the lens was nothing more than hallucinations, then in this day and age, we would still be ignoring the existence of germs.

Very profound scientific analysis has come to impressively, convincingly and decisively demonstrate that the atom is in no way the most infinitesimal particle of matter. Atomic physicists have created the dogma of the atom, and firmly, irrevocably, and unappealably, they proceed to excommunicate, accurse and throw their imprecations and anathemas against any and all attempts to delve further.

In no way would we declare ourselves against the intellect. What we want is to specify functions, and that is not a crime. Undoubtedly, the intellect is useful within its orbit; out of orbit –I repeat what I already said at the beginning of this conference– it is useless. But if we become fanatical about the intellect and we flatly refuse to want to go up the steps of imagination, we would never be able to think psychologically. And whoever does not know how to think psychologically is left trapped, with absolute exclusivity, by what is noustical-sensorial and he can even become in fact a fanatic of the Marxist dialectics.

IIThey believe that they are the center of the universe
The partisans of dialectical materialism as a closed sect. They accept nothing outside their own pontiffs, see nothing beyond the leaf they live on and ignore that they ignore; beneath the refusal he finds pride and a psychological trauma.
The fanatic partisans of the dialectic materialism do not accept anything that disagrees with their materialistic pontificates and priests (the tricksters of science). Those sectarian fanatics do not want to recognize other methods for investigation and scientific corroboration. They want to recognize only their authoritative pontificates and priests. They believe themselves to have the last word of knowledge; they are convinced that no one knows more than they do.
Endocrinology & Criminology, 1957
To that end, the geographic east and the cultural east, namely: Tibet, Grand Tartare, China, Siam, Mongolia, etc. do not exist for the fanatic partisans of dialectic materialism, because they believe that they are the center of the universe and no one knows more than they do. They think that everything that does not belong to them is worthless, and only what belongs to them is of value, because they think themselves to be wise, powerful, omnipotent, etc.
Endocrinology & Criminology, 1957
What is most ludicrous about these sectarians of the dialectic materialism is that they do not want to see beyond their noses. They put a limit to life based on their little intelligence. They seem to be like the medieval people who believed that beyond the Cape of Finisterre there was no more land and this was the limit of the earth. However, when Christopher Columbus talked about his projected adventure, they qualified him as a madman. Thus, if the Queen of Spain, Isabel la Catolica, had never helped Columbus in his intrepid enterprise, then the Spaniards would never have discovered America. Another intrepid one would have come ahead of them.
Endocrinology & Criminology, 1957
The sectarian materialists, who do not see beyond dogmatic procedures, look like the caterpillar that believes that the leaf where it lives is the whole. The caterpillar ignores that above and below that leaf there exists many other leaves from the tree where it lives. Likewise, the sectarian materialist ignores that other worlds exist above and below his external sensorial perceptions. What is worse is that those sectarian materialists not only ignore, but moreover, they ignore that they ignore. They are twofold ignorant. We, the Gnostics, do not reach the point of affirming that scientific materialistic investigation is useless. What we, the Gnostics, condemn is the fanaticism of the materialistic sect.
Endocrinology & Criminology, 1957
If you materialists want to see and analyze them, then get a special lens. This special lens is clairvoyance. Do the perceptions of clairvoyance bother you? Well then, it is very clear that you are fanaticized! A psychological trauma is what lies in the depths of the materialists’ fanaticism. So, in regards to this type of trauma, within these types of minds, everything that relates to spirituality provokes a psychological resistance. Therefore, the materialists’ minds have a psychopathic sickness indeed.

IIIWe must be tolerant with our fellow man
Tolerance grows only as the psychic aggregates of intolerance are dissolved, and destructive criticism falls away with them. He also marks its limit: carried to the extreme, tolerance becomes complicity with crime, as any virtue out of its place turns into a vice.
A practice
And when it comes to intolerance, this leads us to criticism: we see the defects of our fellow man, but we do not see our own; we see the speck in the eye of the other, but we do not see the log in our own. Only when one sees from the point of view of others does he learn to be more tolerant with his fellow man, and as a result the destructive and harmful criticism disappears. It becomes necessary, therefore, to learn to put ourselves in the place of others.

The same with all the virtues. Every virtue, however beautiful it may be, has its antithesis. Take for example, the virtue of tolerance. It is obvious that we must be tolerant with our fellow man, but tolerance in excess becomes complicity to crime. Someone comes, for example, to murder our relatives –a son, a brother– bandits who have raided the house. Our duty in that moment is to defend our son who is being attacked, to defend the innocent, to defend our brother; as heads of families, to know how to respond. If we, as tolerant people, say: “No, I will not raise my hand against anyone!”, and say to the bandit who is murdering the son or who is raping the daughter: “I bless you, brother, I forgive you for all these crimes that you are committing. God bless you!” Would that be just? Look, here is tolerance taken to the maximum. It is obvious that he would become an accomplice to the crimes.

All the religions and spiritual schools in the world are very neces sary and serve as an antechamber to entry into the Vestibule of Wisdom. We should never speak against these schools and religions because all are necessary for the world. in these schools and reli gions we receive the first light of spirituality. The worst would be a people without religion, a people who persecute those dedicated to spiritual studies. In fact, a people without religion is monstrous. Each human group needs its school, its religion, its sect, its instructors etc. Each human group is different, and therefore the different schools and religions are necessary.

Whoever treads the path of initiation should know how to respect the beliefs of others. CHARITY Whoever follows the Path of the Perfect Matrimony should develop charity. Cruel and pitiless people do not progress in this path. It is urgent to learn to love and always be willing to give even the last drop of blood for others. The warmth of charity opens all the doors of the heart. The warmth of charity brings Solar Faith to the mind. Charity is conscious love. The fire of charity develops the chakra of the heart. The fire of charity permits the Sexual Serpent to rise rapidly through the medullar channel. Whoever wants to advance rapidly on the Path of the Razor’s Edge, should practise Sexual Magic intensely and give himself totally to the Great Universal Charity. Thus, by sacrificing himself absolutely for his fellowman and giving his blood and his life for them, he will be rapidly Christified.

What science rejects today, it accepts tomorrow. Today those who laugh at Paracelsus and the Eskimos because of the elementals, gnomes, pygmies, salamanders, genies, undines, sylphs etc., will have to laugh at themselves and become red with embarrassment when these creatures are rediscovered by science. Who would have believed only five years ago in the glass snake? Now, in 1961 a famous scientist, one of those who previously described himself as incredulous, has just discovered the famous glass snake. This snake has the power to drop its tail at will in cases of danger, easily being able to regenerate it afterwards. When the glass snake finds itself in danger, attacked by some animal, it coils up, becomes rigid and throws itself over the animal. It then instantly abandons its tail and it head escapes in a flash. The animal is distracted by the tail while the snake saves itself. Later a new tail grows from the head. Thus it; Nature has many marvels, and it is necessary to learn how to respect all religions, because they are but forms of a single universal religion. Tremendous truths and cosmic sciences are contained in every religion, unknown to the erudite ignoramuses of this barbaric age. All those who want to profoundly self-realize must work in their laboratory with the Sulphur (Fire), the Nitrogen (Air), the Man (Water) and the Bull (Earth). These four elements form a cross. The al chemist who follows the Path of the Perfect Matrimony must transmute the lead into gold within the profound caverns of the great mountain range (the spinal column).

For example, he who criticizes other’s Religion or another’s School or another’s sect is not charitable with the word. Really, he becomes cruel and merciless... It is not what goes into the mouth that harms man but what comes out! The mouth supplies injury, intrigue, defamation, calumny, hate... All of which harms man... All the Religions are like precious pearls strung on the golden thread of the Divinity. But avoid all types of fanaticism because with it we cause great harm to man, our fellowman. Not only does one hurt others with coarse words or with refined or artistic ironies but also with the tone of voice, with an arrhythmic, disharmonious accent.

VReligions are precious pearls strung on the golden thread of Divinity
One cosmic religion taking many forms, each religion a pearl on the same thread. From it follow his statements that Gnosis scorns no religion, that every people needs its religion, and that a temple should be built for all of them.
Really there is only one unique and cosmic religion. This religion assumes different forms according to the times and the needs of humanity. Therefore, religious conflicts are absurd because, at their base all religions are only modifications of the universal cosmic religion. From this point of view we affirm that this book is not against any religion, school or system of thought. The only purpose of this book is to give to humanity a Key a sexual secret, a Key with which every living being may assimilate the Christic principle contained in the foundation of all the great religions of the world.
The Perfect Matrimony, 1950 (ed. 1966)
Religions are precious pearls strung on the golden thread of Divinity. People need their religions. Here, we have Christianity; in the Arab world there is Mohamedanism; there, among the Hindustani, are Hinduism and Buddhism, etc., but people always need their religion. A people without religion is a barbarous people, we cannot deny that.

Now it is necessary to love; only by love will we be saved. Let go of religious jealousy. Build the temple of all religions. Build churches for the holy Priests of all religions, schools and beliefs to officiate. God is love, my dear children, and only with love can we be saved. All religions are precious pearls strung on the golden thread of divinity.

We should not forget that there are rituals of light and darkness. We possess the secret rituals of the Adorable Saviour of the World. We neither scorn nor underestimate any religion. All religions are very precious pearls strung upon the golden thread of Divinity. We only affirm that Gnosis is the flame from which emerge all religions of the universe. That is all.

How this was made. All fifty-two books were extracted — 73,105 paragraphs,
2,157,671 words — and swept for every form of the word: fanatic, fanatical,
fanaticism; for its kin: sectarian, dogmatic, dogma,
intolerance and tolerance, the Inquisition and the stake, anathema
and excommunication, heretics, proselytes, the dead letter; and for the phrases
he uses when he teaches it without naming it: religious persecution, sects set against sects,
religions and schools that fight and hate, the mind bottled up in the dogma, the fixed idea, blind
faith, the fanatics of materialism, prejudice beside belief, and on the other side, respect for all
religions and the golden thread. Bare sect, stake, dogma,
persecuted and prejudice were measured and narrowed first, because most of them are
something else. That returned 439 candidate paragraphs in 45 books. Every one was read
twice, by independent readers working from a written brief; they agreed on whether to print
96.6% of the time and on the class 90.0%, and a third reader, who saw neither verdict, settled the
15 they did not. 84 were judged printable and 80 are printed here; the rest are recorded
with the reason each was set aside.
What was set aside. 116 paragraphs where fanaticism is named in passing and the subject is
elsewhere; 33 that belong to a finished work, 21 of them the dogma of evolution; 30 of narrative;
27 of polemic against a doctrine or a named school that teaches nothing about the fanatic; 18 of
history told without a lesson drawn; 15 that belong to The Mind; 14 where the word is something else
(among them the pearls cast before swine, and the heresy of separatism); and a handful that belong
to Hypocrisy. Sixty-four more were judged marginal.
Some of it is spoken, not written. 8 of these passages come from the two
Fifth Gospel volumes, across 5 named lectures.
Nothing of his is changed. No mend was needed. One paragraph was set aside at the
last because a fuller printing of the same words stands in the same section, and three were taken
into the passage before them, of which they are the second half.
No sentence of his is cut in half. Each range was extended against the corpus until his
sentence closed; 17 ranges run over more than one paragraph.
23 passages also stand in a finished work, and every one is marked where it
stands. This booklet reprints them so that the whole teaching stands in one place.
Checked five ways. Every reader’s note was proved to sit on the passage as printed. Every
printed pair was compared as sequences. Every ragged edge was repaired or named. Every one of the
26 passages marked a practice was proved to carry its own instruction. And every
passage was checked word for word against a fresh extraction of its book.
