The Sleep of the Consciousness

That humanity lives asleep and believes itself awake: the collective hypnosis and the Consciousness bottled in the ego, dreaming while we live and work, the sleep that goes on after death, what only the sleeping do, and the first step out of it, in his own words, from the fifty-two books

This is a short book and a doorway. It gathers what he says of the sleep itself: that we are asleep, why, how it shows, what it costs, and that it goes on after death. How to wake is the work of Awakening, and this one ends where that one begins.

The first part is the sleep: “It is necessary to know that humanity lives with its consciousness asleep.” “Unfortunately, we think the best of ourselves and not even suspect that we are asleep.”

The second part is why we sleep: “…all human beings are in a state of “collective hypnosis”.” “Indubitably, the bottled up Consciousness sleeps profoundly.”

The third part is dreaming awake, by day and by night: “…during this waking state he continues dreaming.” “Really the “Ego” brings its dreams to the suprasensible worlds.”

The fourth part is the sleep after death: “…they appear to be sleepwalkers, they have their consciousness totally asleep, they ambulate everywhere and firmly believe that they are alive.” “…we will continue in the beyond as sleepwalkers, as ghosts.”

The fifth part is what the sleep costs: “Millions of asleep machines... against millions of asleep machines.” “Only those asleep are capable of those things!”

The last part is the door: “The first necessity, if one is to awaken consciousness, is to know that one is asleep.” “We need to come out of this hypnotic dream.”

Part One — People live asleep

13 passages

IHumanity lives with its consciousness asleep

These passages state the plain fact at the root of the whole teaching: the consciousness of human beings is asleep. People work, walk, drive, marry and die in that state; ordinary people are said to have about three percent of it awake.

It is necessary to know that humanity lives with its consciousness asleep. People work sleeping. People walk through the streets sleeping. People live and die sleeping. When we come to the conclusion that the entire world lives sleeping, then we comprehend the necessity to awaken. We need the awakening of consciousness. We want the awakening of consciousness.

A hundred points for the whole of the consciousness: three lit and ninety-seven asleep, as he gives the figures in passage 8. Underneath, three of his lines from passage 1.

So-called infraconsciousness, unconsciousness, subconsciousness etc., are only different forms or zones of the sleeping consciousness. It is urgent to awaken consciousness to become illuminated, a clairvoyant, supraconsciousness.

The Perfect Matrimony, 1950 (ed. 1961) also in Awakening, Fascination, Identification, The Consciousness, The Subconscious

Normally, the consciousness sleeps deeply in the intellectual animal called “man”.

Fundamental Education, 1965 also in Identification, The Consciousness

Rare, very rare, are the moments in which the consciousness is awake. The intellectual animal works, drives automobiles, gets married, dies, etc., all the while with his consciousness totally asleep, and only in quite special moments does it awaken.

Fundamental Education, 1965 also in Awakening, The Consciousness

The consciousness of all human beings on planet Earth is asleep. It is impossible to experience that which is the Truth while one’s consciousness is totally asleep.

The Buddha's Necklace, 1967 also in Awakening, The Consciousness

When a person understands that he is asleep, the process of self-awakening begins. What we are saying is not something people readily accept. If we tell an intellectual that he is asleep, he will certainly be offended. People are fully convinced that they are awake. People work while asleep... dreaming; they drive cars while asleep… dreaming; they get married while asleep; and they live while sleeping... dreaming: nevertheless, they are totally convinced that they are awake.

The Buddha's Necklace, 1967 also in Awakening, Fascination

1) The three-brained, three-centred biped mistakenly called man, is always asleep here and now, not only has he already lost planetary Consciousness, furthermore - and this is worse - he continues to degenerate.

The Mystery of the Golden Blossom, 1971 also in Awakening, The Consciousness

Normally people only possess 3% of awake consciousness and 97% of subconsciousness or asleep consciousness.

This doctrine goes straight to the point, to concrete, dear and definite facts. This doctrine emphatically affirms that the “intellectual animal,” mistakenly called human being, is a mechanical, unconscious, asleep biped.

All human beings are one hundred percent mechanical. Unconscious beings working with their consciousness asleep without knowing where they come from, or where they are going; they are profoundly hypnotized.

Obviously, psychological defects make us abnormal, that is, the inhabitants of Earth have an abnormal psyche, they are crazy, terribly crazy, but they do not realize it. I want you to understand that the Consciousness is bottled up among all those psychic aggregates which together constitute the Ego, the Myself, the “I Myself’. People think that they are awake, but they are mistaken, they sleep profoundly: they drive cars with the Consciousness asleep, they work asleep, they walk on the streets asleep, they live asleep, but they believe that they are awake.

IIAll people believe that they are awake

The sleeper does not know that he sleeps. People are offended when told so, the machine denies that it dreams, and the learned ignoramus does not know that he does not know.

It is very difficult for people to accept that they are asleep.

Fundamental Education, 1965 also in Awakening

All people believe that they are awake. If someone was to accept that his consciousness is asleep, it is clear that from that very moment he would begin to awaken.

Fundamental Education, 1965 also in Awakening, Identification

It is very difficult to make other persons comprehend that they have their consciousness asleep; people never accept the tremendous truth that they are asleep.

Esoteric Treatise of Hermetic Astrology, 1967 also in Identification

The humanoid machine because of the very fact that it is a machine dreams but it ignores that it dreams, it denies that it dreams, it firmly believes that it is awake and it would never accept the thesis that it is asleep.

Only by awakening consciousness is it possible to accept such differences. Unfortunately, the profane person believes himself to be awake and is even offended when someone tells him that his consciousness is asleep. Talking in Socratic language we would say that the learned ignoramuses, the asleep profane person, the unconscious machine does not only ignore but also ignores that it ignores; does not only not know but also and what is worse, does not know that it does not know.

Yes, There Is a Hell, a Devil and Karma, 1973–74 also in Awakening, Fascination, Identification, The Consciousness

And how is one when he wakes up? It is a little tough what I’m going to tell you; get ready, it is an atomic bomb. When one wakes up, he realizes that his fellow men, who he once considered normal people, are not normal, rather they are abnormal –but that is when he is awake–. When one is asleep, he believes that he is normal and that everyone around him is normal. Right. But when one wakes up, with pain, he realizes that he is stuck in an asylum, that everyone is “insane”. But while one is also crazy, one thinks one is healthy; it is the curious thing of the case.

The Fifth Gospel Chaotic Consciousness and Intelligent Consciousness Public Lecture – Torreón, Coahuila, Mexico also in Awakening

We think that we are individuals when we are just machines. We never accept to be treated as machines, we cannot accept others thinking that we are asleep. We feel awake, very awake, but in truth we are asleep.

We can assure you that there is a ninety-seven percent of subconsciousness and a three percent of Consciousness. Speaking in other terms, we would say that ninety-seven percent of the Consciousness is asleep and that there is only three percent of awakened Consciousness. However, there are people who do not reach the three percent of awakened Consciousness, normally they reach two percent, and there are those who only reach one percent. But if we tell people that their Consciousness is asleep, they would not believe it, rather they would be offended. It is hard to tell people that they sleep, because they do not believe you, they think they are awake, or they think that we are hurting them, that we are offending them.

Out of all the physical phenomena that take place around us –I clarify and emphasize: the physical ones–, we can only perceive a millionth part of such phenomena, that is, there is an extraordinary multiplicity of physical phenomena that occur around us, and that we are not, in truth, capable of perceiving. We are asleep, but we think we are awake. We do not admit to being asleep, we even get offended when someone treats us like that, but, indeed, we need to awaken.

Part Two — The entire world is hypnotized

7 passages

IHypnosis of a collective type exists

All human beings, without exception of race or creed, are said to be under a hypnosis that flows through all of nature. It is hard to discover because people only recognise hypnotism when it is concentrated in a session.

We know that if a hypnotized subject, for example, is ordered to go and kill someone, he will do it. That is already anticipated in the Penal Code of all the countries of the Earth. So it happens with people from all latitudes. They are hypnotized, but believe that they are awake. If one says to them that the hour to go to war has arrived, they go to war. They do not want to go, but they go because they are hypnotized. And the hypnotized subject, hypnotized he is. This is very serious, and tremendously true.

For the Few, 1977 also in Awakening, Fascination

Everyone has a way of thinking; everyone believes that his or her way is the most correct. But, really and truly, the dispersed ways of thinking of each one of us, or of everyone all together, have nothing correct, since people are hypnotized. How can a person who is hypnotized think correctly? But, they believe that they are thinking correctly. There is your error. Your mental habits are useless.

For the Few, 1977 also in Awakening, Fascination

Although it may seem incredible, all human beings are in a state of “collective hypnosis”. Such hypnosis is produced by the residual state of the abominable Kundartiguador organ; when the latter was eliminated, the different psychic aggregates or inhuman elements which in their mass constitute the myself, the oneself, remained. These elements and subelements, in turn, condition the consciousness and keep it in a state of hypnosis. In this manner, therefore, hypnosis of a collective type exists. The entire world is hypnotized! The mind is engrossed in the world of the five senses and does not manage to comprehend how it could become independent of them; it firmly believes that it is a god. Our interior life, the true life of thoughts and feelings, continues being confused for our mere reasoning and intellective conceptions. Nonetheless, at the same time we know very well that the place where we really live is our world of thoughts and feelings; this is something that no one can deny.

The Revolution of the Dialectic also in Awakening, Fascination, The Consciousness, The Kundabuffer, The Mind

However, I am going to tell you something that is terribly true: all human beings, without exception of race, creed, caste or color, are hypnotized. They have the Consciousness asleep, they have it totally stuck within the “I”.

The Fifth Gospel Analysis of the Human Psyche Public Lecture – 1977 also in Fascination, Identification

Friends, it is urgent to comprehend that all human beings are hypnotized. There is a hypnotic force in all of nature that has humanity submerged in hypnosis. Awakening is urgent! And for this, we need to profoundly observe ourselves. Only on that basis, is the dissolution of the Ego, the “I”, the Myself, the Oneself possible.

The Fifth Gospel Analysis of the Human Psyche Public Lecture – 1977 also in Fascination, Identification, Psychological Death, Self-Observation

One could object to me that if that is the case, then why do we not see them? Why do we not witness what is unusual? Why are we not given the possibility to experience those wonders? The answer is the following: no one has forbidden us the capacity of experimentation, no one prevents us from seeing and hearing what happens around us. If such phenomena are not perceptible at this moment to our external senses, it is due to a single reason –and a very serious one by the way–: we are in a state of hypnosis, asleep; and the person in a hypnotic trance becomes incapable of perceiving such phenomena.

The Fifth Gospel Pedagogy of Knowing How to Live Third Chamber Mexico City – 1974 also in Awakening, Fascination

It is very difficult –I repeat– to discover the state of hypnosis in which one is. One comes to realize that hypnotism exists when the hypnotic force flows faster, and when it concentrates in a specific place, when a hypnotism session is performed. Other than that, beside such a moment, one does not realize that one is in a state of hypnosis. If one could awaken from this sleep in which one is, he would then see the wonderful phenomena that have occurred around him since the beginning of the world.

IIThe hypnotic power of the abominable Kundartiguador Organ

He traces the collective hypnosis to the residues of the abominable Kundartiguador organ, the descending serpent, whose blind lunar force produced the ego. Two passages mark that this lunar force has nothing to do with the Kundalini.

People are hypnotized by that Blind Fohatic Force of the Kundartiguador Organ.

The Solar Bodies, 1968 also in Awakening, Fascination, The Kundabuffer

Speaking about the School of the Fourth Way, we find that Gurdjieff, Ouspensky and Nicoll, have expounded that which they know, but the exposition contains many defects. For example: Gurdjieff commits the error of confusing the Kundalini with the abominable Kundartiguador organ, and Ouspensky commits the same error. We must not forget that there is that blind Fohatic force which has people hypnotised, but that it has nothing to do with the Kundalini. The Kundartiguador is the lunar fire. The bible speaks of the 44 fires, but one only can speak of two great fires: Kundalini and Kundartiguador. The first is the Pentecostal Fire, the ray of Vulcan ascending the spinal column; the positive fire which crystallises in worlds and suns. Its antithesis is the Kundartiguador, the negative fire which crystallises in those psychic aggregates, those screaming and troublesome I which we carry within. They are negative crystallisations which have people submerged in the unconscious.

The one that goes up is the Bronze Serpent that healed the Israelites in the desert and the serpent that was coiled on the rod of Asclepius, the God of Medicine. The one that descends is the tempting serpent of Eden, it is the horrible seven-headed Python that was crawling through the mud of the earth, the one which Apollo, irritated, wounded with his darts. The latter is the one that has humanity hypnotized.

The Fifth Gospel The Wonders of Awakened Consciousness Public Lecture – 1975 also in Fascination, The Two Serpents

The various psychic aggregates that we carry inside us, and within which the Consciousness is bottled, are the terrible result of the hypnotic power of the abominable Kundartiguador Organ, the descending serpent. Now you will understand why that horrible Python has massively hypnotized all humanity.

The Fifth Gospel The Wonders of Awakened Consciousness Public Lecture – 1975 also in Awakening, Fascination, The Consciousness, The Kundabuffer, The Two Serpents

Much has been said about the abominable Kundartiguador Organ, a fatal organ that humanity had in ancient times. It has not been completely lost. We know well that a bone residue still exists at the lower base of the spine; no one ignores it. Such residue belongs to the abominable Kundartiguador Organ, and it possesses, among other things, a formidable hypnotic power; that general, collective, hypnotic current is fascinating.

The Fifth Gospel Pedagogy of Knowing How to Live Third Chamber Mexico City – 1974 also in Awakening, Fascination, Identification, The Kundabuffer

Thus, the state of unconscious sleep in which humanity lives is due to the fact that the Consciousness is bottled up within the Ego; and since the Ego is the result of the abominable Kundartiguador Organ, we can draw the conclusion or corollary that the hypnotic sleep in which the Consciousness is found is due to the abominable Kundartiguador Organ.

The Fifth Gospel Practical Solutions Against Collective Hypnotism Third Chamber – Mexico City – 1976 also in Awakening, Fascination, The Consciousness, The Kundabuffer

When we observe the humanoids, both in life and after death, we see that they are absolutely irresponsible, machines controlled by the various aggregates. The latter fight for supremacy. Each one of them wants to control the capital centers of the machine, that is the harsh reality. In that sense, all humanoids are irresponsible. The psychic aggregates are the result of the consequences of the abominable Kundartiguador Organ. We also said that the Consciousness is bottled up within the Ego, and that it processes itself according to its own conditioning. Now then, if the Ego is the result of the bad consequences of the abominable Kundartiguador Organ, this means that the Consciousness is hypnotized by that universal hypnotic force. All humanoids are victims of that hypnotic force, but people do not realize the harsh reality until such hypnotic energy flows more rapidly, in a precipitated and concentrated way, as in the hypnotic sessions. If we observe carefully the humanoids, we will see that they are hypnotized, that they commit hundreds of mistakes –if we analyze them, it is true–, but we attribute it to the character, to the psychological song of people, we look for one hundred and fifty thousand justifications, etc.

IIIThe bottled up Consciousness sleeps profoundly

The Essence is shut inside the many I's and works by its own conditioning, which is to say asleep. Within each I it sleeps and dreams, and while it stays there the sleeper may even dream that he is awake.

Within each “I” (of the Legion of Satanic “I’s”) the Consciousness sleeps profoundly. The Consciousness dreams within each “I.”

Each bottle stands for one of the many “I’s”, and the small light in each for the fraction of the consciousness he says is shut inside it (passage 50), asleep (passages 44 and 47).

It becomes pathetic and evident to comprehend in depth that while the consciousness continues bottled up within the pluralized ‘I’, not only will we sleep, but even worse, the consciousness will sometimes have the bad taste of dreaming of being awakened.

Unquestionably, as long as the Essence or Consciousness continues bottled up within each one of the “I” that we carry within our interior, it will always be asleep, in a subconscious state.

Treatise of Revolutionary Psychology, 1975–76 also in Awakening, The Consciousness, The Essence, The Subconscious

It is tacit that humanity has its consciousness bottled in the ego. It is clear that as long as people continue thinking as they think, feeling as they feel, and continue with their same rancid habits, they will not be able to awaken their consciousness; it will continue to be hypnotized. Consequently, or as a corollary, it can thus be said that the Bodhichitta will never come forth in people.

Indubitably, the bottled up Consciousness sleeps profoundly.

Pistis Sophia Unveiled, 1983 also in Identification, The Consciousness

Disgracefully, the Essence, the Consciousness, is found bottled up within these psychic aggregates. Thus, the Consciousness processes itself by virtue of its own embottlement. Now we better comprehend why humanity is found in such a hypnotic state, unconscious and asleep.

Pistis Sophia Unveiled, 1983 also in Awakening, Fascination, The Consciousness, The Essence

When they raised their eyes toward the infinite, they could perceive other planetary humanities. The planets of space were visible to the ancient people in a different way, for they saw the aura of the planets, and they could perceive as well the Planetary Genies. But when the human Consciousness became imprisoned within all those “I’s” or psychic aggregates which constitute the Myself, the “I”, the Ego, then the Consciousness fell asleep. Now, it processes itself by virtue of its own bottling.

The Fifth Gospel The Exercise of SELF-KNOWLEDGE also in Awakening, Fascination, The Consciousness, The Essence

The harsh reality of the facts is that our Consciousness is found bottled up, buried, stuffed into all that multiplicity of “I’s”, in all that tenebrous and abominable horde that we carry within us. The Consciousness, in us, is asleep, it is stuck inside a dungeon, or inside many dungeons because each “I” is a dungeon, a horrible prison.

The Fifth Gospel The Organization of our Inner World Public Lecture – 1975 also in Awakening, The Consciousness, The Essence, The Many I’s

Unfortunately, the Consciousness –which is the worthiest thing that we all have within us– is trapped, tucked inside each one of these “I’s” or persons who live within our person. As these “I’s” –or inner persons we carry within us– are one hundred percent subjective, naturally, our Consciousness is functioning by virtue of its own conditioning; that is, it has become subjective, it is asleep.

IVIdentification and Fascination lead to the Sleep of the Consciousness

Identification opens the way to fascination, and fascination to sleep. A street demonstration, a football match, a film or a shop window is enough for a person to forget himself and dream.

People are fascinated by everything in life. People forget themselves because they are fascinated. The drunkard in the bar is fascinated by alcohol, the place, the pleasures, his friends and the women. The vain woman in front of a mirror is fascinated by her enchantment with herself. The rich avaricious person is fascinated by money and possessions. The honest worker in the factory is fascinated by hard work. The father of the family is fascinated by his children. All human beings are fascinated and sleep profoundly. When we drive a car we are astonished to see people dashing across the roads and streets without paying attention to the danger from the cars. Others actually throw themselves under wheels of cars. Poor people... walking asleep... like sleepwalkers. They walk sleeping, endangering their own lives. Any clairvoyant can see their dreams. People dream about everything that keeps them fascinated.

The Perfect Matrimony, 1950 (ed. 1961) also in Fascination, Greed, Identification, The Remembrance of Oneself

How one falls asleep

All types of identification produce fascination and sleep.you alreadyforgot yourselfyou have becomeidentifiedyou arefascinatedyou now fall intothe sleep ofconsciousnessyou are going quitecalmly on the streetyou are dreamingbeautifully, you nolonger know who you arehis example: a street demonstration
His street demonstration taken step by step (passages 53 and 54): one forgets oneself, is identified, is fascinated, and falls asleep. The heading is his rule from passage 52.

All types of identification produce fascination and sleep. While walking down a street, you suddenly meet with a crowd protesting something in front of the president’s palace. If not in a state of alertness, you will identify with the demonstrators, join the crowd, and become fascinated. Later you fall asleep you shout, throw stones, and do things that, in other circumstances, you wouldn’t do, not even for a million dollars. Forgetting oneself is an error with incalculable consequences. To identify with anything is the height of stupidity because fascination and sleep are the result. It is impossible for someone to awaken consciousness if he forgets himself, if he identifies with any thing. It is impossible for the aspirant to awaken consciousness if he allows himself to become fascinated, to fall asleep.

The Buddha's Necklace, 1967 also in Anger, Awakening, Fascination, Identification, The Remembrance of Oneself

Identification and Fascination lead to the Sleep of the Consciousness. For example: you are going quite calmly on the street, you suddenly meet a public demonstration; the masses vociferate, they talk about the leaders of the people, the flags wave through the air, people seem to be crazy, everybody talks, everybody yells.

Esoteric Treatise of Hermetic Astrology, 1967 also in Fascination, Identification

The public demonstration is so interesting that you already forgot yourself, you have become identified so much with that street demonstration, that you no longer think of anything else, you are fascinated, you now fall into the sleep of consciousness; mixed with the shouting masses, you also shout and you even throw stones and insults; you are dreaming beautifully, you no longer know who you are, you have forgotten everything. We will now give you another simpler example: You are in your living room, seated before the television screen, cowboy scenes appear, there is shooting, lovers’ dramas, etc., etc.

Esoteric Treatise of Hermetic Astrology, 1967 also in Anger, Fascination, Identification

Human beings live absolutely asleep. If, for example, a team of soccer players were to awaken consciousness during a match, you can be absolutely certain that the game would end, because the players would be ashamed and run from the soccer field immediately. The fundamental cause of the deep sleep in which humanity lives, is that which is called fascination. Soccer players are deeply fascinated with the game, and it follows that they are asleep while they play. Apparently they are playing awake, but the reality is that they are dreaming.

Esoteric Course of Kabbalah also in Fascination, Identification

The method to awaken the consciousness is based on self-remembering. Every human being is fascinated by different things, as we already said in the preceding paragraph. When we are fascinated with a particular image or representation, we forget ourselves. We are dreaming at that time. I have seen people during a public demonstration throw themselves into violence. In such cases, gentlemen who in their sound judgment are not capable of speaking an ill word have insulted and thrown stones with the crowds in a state of confusion. Here you have the power of fascination; one forgets oneself and then falls asleep, often dreaming about completely absurd things. After the dream passes comes shame, embarrassment and problems. The Gnostic student must not allow himself to become fascinated by anything.

Esoteric Course of Kabbalah also in Awakening, Fascination, Identification, The Consciousness, The Remembrance of Oneself

Recently, I saw a woman watching a movie where the actors are crying. Well, fake crying, of course, but that woman who was watching the movie is crying terribly as well, in a state of dreadful anguish. See what identification is. What has that poor woman who has identified with that movie done? Well, she created the hero or the heroine of the movie, a new “I” that she created within herself. That new “I” has stolen part of her Consciousness. So now that person, if she was asleep before, she is even more asleep now. Why? Due to identification.

The Fifth Gospel The Exercise of SELF-KNOWLEDGE also in Fascination, Identification

Then comes fascination: one is fascinated by the object. If it is a beautiful suit, one says: “How nice! As soon as I have money, I will buy it; this color is very beautiful!”, etc. And the woman would say: “Yes, this dress is very pretty. I would buy it!” Well, in the end, the fascination would come with that object, with that article of clothing, and then one would enter the sleep of the Consciousness.

VIt keeps the intellectual humanoid in a state of sleep

Other forces hold the sleep in place: Tamas with its heedlessness, fantasy, inner self-consideration and the subtle rhetoric of the ego. Each keeps the consciousness asleep without the person noticing.

But know thou, oh, Bharata, that Tamas is born of ignorance, deluding all embodied beings; it binds fast the embodied being, by heedlessness, laziness and sleep” (asleep Consciousness, the sleep of Consciousness).

Esoteric Treatise of Hermetic Astrology, 1967 also in Fascination, Identification, Laziness, The Consciousness

The intellectual animal is so hypnotized by his fantasy, that he dreams that he is a lion or eagle when in truth he is nothing more than a vile slug from the mud of the earth. The megalomaniac would never accept these aforementioned affirmations. Obviously, regardless of what people might say, he feels to be an arch-hierophant, without suspecting that fantasy is merely nothing. “Fantasy is nothing else but fantasy.” Fantasy is a real force, which acts universally upon mankind. It keeps the intellectual humanoid in a state of sleep (hypnotic state), causing him to believe that he is already a human being, that he possesses true individuality, a will, awakened consciousness and a mind of his own, etc.

Treatise of Revolutionary Psychology, 1975–76 also in Awakening, Fascination, Imagination, Inspiration, Intuition, The Many I’s, Vanity

There is not the least bit of doubt regarding the disastrous consequences of “intimate self consideration.” Besides hypnotizing the consciousness, it causes us to lose a lot of energy.

Treatise of Revolutionary Psychology, 1975–76 also in The Psychological Song

The rhetoric of the ego is the art of speaking well and with elegance, in such a subtle manner that we do not realize at what moment we have already fallen into error. The rhetoric of the ego is so subliminal that due to that reason, our consciousness is as asleep as it is and without us realizing it.

The Revolution of the Dialectic

Obviously, it is the fantasy that has humanity immersed in the state of unconsciousness in which it finds itself. As long as fantasy exists, the Consciousness will continue to be asleep.

IFour states of consciousness exist

The so-called waking state is the second of four states, a continuation of the night's dreams and more dangerous than the first. Eikasia, the lowest condition of mind, is defined as the deepest sleep, an infra-human state.

Eikasia is ignorance, human cruelty, barbarism, extremely profound sleep, a brutal and instinctive world, an infra-human state.

The Perfect Matrimony, 1950 (ed. 1961)

The four states as he names them in passage 66, lowest first, with his notes on the first two from passages 68 and 70. The two lower steps are the sleep and the so-called waking state.

The man who is sleeping and dreaming believes that he awakens merely by returning to the waking state. However, in reality, during this waking state he continues dreaming.

Fundamental Education, 1965 also in Awakening

Four states of consciousness exist: dreaming during the waking state; dreaming while the physical body is asleep; self-consciousness; awakened objective consciousness.

The Buddha's Necklace, 1967 also in Awakening, The Consciousness

The Intellectual Animal divides his painful and miserable life between run-of-the-mill sleep and the improperly called Vigil state, which unfortunately is another form of sleep. While the physical body sleeps in bed, the Ego, enveloped in its Lunar Bodies, goes around with the consciousness asleep like a somnambulist moving freely in the molecular region.

Esoteric Treatise of Hermetic Astrology, 1967 also in Awakening, Fascination, Identification, The Consciousness, The Keys of Astral Travel

When the Ego returns to its physical body, the dreams continue in the interior; the so called Vigil State is really dreaming while Awake.

Esoteric Treatise of Hermetic Astrology, 1967 also in Awakening

The second state (mistakenly classified as a state of Vigil Consciousness) is in its depth, a simple continuation of our Dreams. Indeed, this state is much more dangerous than the first state.

The Solar Bodies, 1968 also in Awakening, The Consciousness

On some occasion we said that there are four levels of men, or four states of Consciousness, to be clearer. A first state of Consciousness is that of a person’s deep and unconscious sleep, of an Ego that left its body asleep in bed, but wanders in the molecular world in a “state of coma” –it is the inferior state–.

The Fifth Gospel The Rescue of our Inner Light also in Awakening, The Consciousness

A second state of Consciousness is that of the dreamer who has returned to his physical body, and who believes that he is in a state of wakefulness. In this case, his dreams continue, it is just that his physical body is in a state of wakefulness. This second type of dreamer is more dangerous, because he can kill, he can steal, he can commit all kinds of crimes. On the other hand, in the first case, the dreamer, who is more infra-human, cannot do any of these things.

IIPeople drive cars dreaming, they do business dreaming

Ordinary scenes make the point: eating while thinking of business, driving while thinking of the fiancée, passing a friend in the street without seeing him. The worst form of the dream, he adds, is to dream of being awake.

If we are eating and thinking about business, it is clear that we are dreaming. If we are driving an automobile and we are thinking of our fiancée, it is logical that we are not awake, we are dreaming. If we are working and we are remembering our child's godfather or godmother, or our friend, or brother, etc, it is clear that we are dreaming.

Christmas Messages, 1952–66 also in Awakening, Fascination

People drive cars dreaming… work dreaming… walk down the street dreaming… live dreaming at all hours.

Fundamental Education, 1965 also in Awakening

People live with Consciousness Asleep, they work dreaming, they drive cars dreaming and they also kill pedestrians who walk dreaming on the streets, absorbed in their own thoughts.

Esoteric Treatise of Hermetic Astrology, 1967 also in Fascination, Identification, The Consciousness

Many times, you are walking on the street, absorbed in your own thoughts, identified with those thoughts, fascinated, dreaming beautifully; suddenly, a friend passes near you, greets you, you do not return the greeting because you do not see him, you are dreaming; the friend becomes angry, he assumes that you are a person without manners or that you are possibly angry; the friend is also going around dreaming; if he was awake, he would not make such conjectures to himself, he would immediately realize that you are walking around asleep.

Esoteric Treatise of Hermetic Astrology, 1967 also in Anger, Awakening, Fascination, Identification

Within this painful planet on which we live, there exist many Asleep Pseudo-Esoteric and Pseudo-Occultist people who dream that they have awakened; meanwhile, they do not comprehend that they are trapped within the dream of their Consciousness’s paws and that many shadows of vengeance are lurking within their interior.

The Solar Bodies, 1968 also in Awakening, The Consciousness

Truly, I believe that the sincerely mistaken one, the sleepy one who dreams of being awake, the Mythomaniac who believes himself to be a super-transcended one, the hallucinated one who qualifies himself as being an Illuminated one, is used to doing very much harm to himself and to humanity. He does more harm than that inflicted by the one who never in his life has entered into our studies.

Runic Magic, 1969 also in Awakening, Clairvoyance, Lying

One minute of unawareness is enough and the mind is already dreaming, recalling something, thinking of something different from the job or deed that we are living at that moment.

Dissolving the I, 1964–65

It is very true that people walk around the streets absorbed in their own thoughts. This is the cause of many accidents. We can’t deny that humans are asleep and walk through the streets like sleepwalkers, profoundly dreaming. All this is very true but for this reason it is urgent to reform the transport systems.

The Social Christ also in Awakening, Fascination, The Law of Destiny

It is useless to blame pedestrians for all the transport accidents. They have not awoken their consciousness yet and walk around dreaming, absorbed in their problems. They forget frequently that cars exist. It is also useless to blame the drivers. We should take into account that they are also asleep. They haven’t awoken their consciousness either.

The Social Christ

So, human beings have the Consciousness of sleepwalkers: they walk asleep. It would be interesting to awaken the Consciousness, that would indeed be interesting, because then one could perceive by himself, directly, the truth. If one were to awaken the Consciousness, one would know the mysteries of life and death. But while one is as he is, with the Consciousness asleep, what can he know about the mysteries of life and death. Nothing, zilch!

The Fifth Gospel The Consequences of Psychological Plurality Public Lecture also in Fascination, Identification, The Consciousness

Master: With the utmost pleasure we will give some explanations related to the awakening of the Consciousness. First of all, it is indispensable to understand, my dear brothers, that the Consciousness of human beings is asleep, unfortunately. People do not want to understand that they are asleep, they all think they are awake, but they asleep. People drive cars dreaming, they do business dreaming, they walk on the streets convinced they are awake, but they sleep profoundly, they dream.

The Fifth Gospel Gnostic Discipline for Awakening Interview – Mexico City – 1970 also in Awakening, Fascination, The Consciousness

Master: Well, one can also dream that one is awake. Many can dream that they are awake, but still they are not. Awakening is what is important, and not dreaming that you are awake, because we are asleep...! One dreams that one is awake, simply, when that kind of phenomena that we are talking about happens to the individual, because to the awakened individual, truly awakened, that kind of phenomena does not happen. The awakened person lives awake in an intensified wakefulness, during those moments in which the physical body lies in bed.

The Fifth Gospel Gnostic Discipline for Awakening Interview – Mexico City – 1970 also in Awakening, Fascination, The Language of Dreams

In the inferior psychism, there is frightful sense-lessness: people who dream and think that they are awake, and what is most serious is that they dream of themselves as awake, they dream believing that they are awake. Such dreamers of a negative – mediumistic– type, such deluded people project their daydreams onto people and see in people their own negative, incoherent and absurd daydreams. That is the harsh reality of the facts!

IIIThey all bring their dreams to the suprasensible worlds

At night the ego leaves the body and carries on the same business in the internal worlds, the carpenter in his workshop and the drunkard in the bar. Whoever dreams by day dreams there too, and brings the dreams back on returning.

Initiation is not a matter of theories, but of realities. “Absolutely practical.” The first thing that is needed is to awaken the Consciousness. It happens that human beings during the normal hours of sleep, when they are not in the physical body, they roam around through the Astral absolutely asleep and they concern themselves with the same things of the day. These sleeping people are not of use as initiates. I know hundreds of theosophists and rosacrucians that do nothing but live asleep and even though they pay dues and read books, and show themselves to be authoritarians before others, at heart, they are nothing but poor sleeping people. So, the first thing that is needed is to awaken the Consciousness, and in order for that there is a necessity to cultivate discernment.

The Elementary Level Perfect Matrimony, 1950 also in Awakening, Fascination, Imagination, Inspiration, Intuition, The Consciousness, The Keys of Astral Travel

People who live dreaming in the physical world also live dreaming in the internal worlds during those hours in which the physical body is sleeping. One needs to cease dreaming in the internal worlds. When we stop dreaming in the physical world, we awaken here and now, and that awakening appears in the internal worlds.

Christmas Messages, 1952–66 also in Awakening

During sleep, every human being wanders in the internal worlds with consciousness asleep. The soul enveloped in its astral body abandons the physical body during sleep. This is how the Etheric Body can repair the dense body.

The Greater Mysteries, 1956 also in The Consciousness, The Greater Mysteries, The Keys of Astral Travel, The Language of Dreams

It is impossible to have objective knowledge as long as we have not attained selfconsciousness. People dream while they live and work; nevertheless, they mistakenly believe they are awake. During the normal dream state of the physical body, the ego, enveloped in its body of desires, sleepwalks through the molecular region, dreaming. On returning to the physical body and then to the waking state, the individual continues his dreams. Whoever awakens consciousness no longer dreams but awakens in the internal worlds while the physical body sleeps.

The Buddha's Necklace, 1967 also in Awakening, Fascination, The Consciousness, The Language of Dreams

It is necessary to know that when people fall asleep, they come out of their physical bodies, but they carry along their dreams, they live in the internal worlds dreaming and when they return to the physical body, they continue with their dreams, they continue dreaming.

Esoteric Treatise of Hermetic Astrology, 1967 also in The Keys of Astral Travel

It is necessary to know that the Ego (I) enveloped in its Lunar Bodies, exits the physical body when the body falls asleep. Unfortunately, the Ego lives asleep in the internal worlds.

Esoteric Treatise of Hermetic Astrology, 1967

In the hours of rest, when the physical body is sleeping in the bed, the “Ego” travels outside the physical body. The “Ego” often travels to very distant places outside the physical body. The “Ego” is living a dream. Really the “Ego” brings its dreams to the suprasensible worlds. In the internal worlds carpenters are in their workshops dreaming about all that which they do in the physical world; the blacksmith in his foundry; the policeman keeping watch over the streets; the tailor in his tailor’s shop; the drunkard in the bar, etc.,—they are all dreaming. They all bring their dreams to the suprasensible worlds.

Esoteric Course of Kabbalah also in Awakening, The Language of Dreams

For example: on one occasion, while working in the astral world, a dream slipped out of my mind. Ipso facto I realized that a dream had just slipped out, and before it took shape in those supra-sensitive regions, I eliminated it. So, I did not give it the opportunity to hypnotize or fascinate me, because I live awake in those worlds, and I see those who are asleep when I work in the supra-sensitive regions. Here, there and everywhere there are thousands of persons, people who are asleep, they look like sleepwalkers as they walk; people who have never in their lives worried about the awakening of the Consciousness.

Part Four — They ignore their death

10 passages

IThey appear to be sleepwalkers

He describes the dead he has met: a man still carrying bundles, a relative laughing at his own mental forms, people who look at him with the eyes of a somnambulist. They do not recognise their own body in the coffin and go on believing they are alive.

That man looked at Juan with the eyes of a somnambulist He did not understand what Juan was trying to make him comprehend. Juan, floating around him, made another attempt. But everything was futile! That man’s conscience was asleep and all attempts to awaken it was a total failure.

Logos, Mantram, Theurgy, 1959 also in Identification, The Keys of Astral Travel

At the hour of death, the Ego takes along its dreams, its worldliness and lives in the world of the dead with its dreams; it continues dreaming, with the Consciousness asleep, it ambulates like a somnambulist, asleep, unconscious.

Esoteric Treatise of Hermetic Astrology, 1967 also in Fascination, Identification, The Consciousness

One feels true sadness, supreme pain upon contemplating so many millions of disembodied people wandering in the region of the dead with their consciousness asleep. You see them there, like cold shadows, with their consciousness profoundly asleep, like specters of the night!

Yes, There Is a Hell, a Devil and Karma, 1973–74

I remember the pathetic case of a poor carrier of heavy bundles; after his death, his ego went around carrying a load, package or bundle on his back. When I tried to make him comprehend his situation, when I tried to make him understand that he was already very dead and that he had no reason to go around carrying heavy bundles on his body, he looked at me with the eyes of a somnambulist; his consciousness was asleep, he was incapable of comprehending me.

Yes, There Is a Hell, a Devil and Karma, 1973–74 also in Fascination, Identification, The Consciousness

The state in which the dead are found is lamentable; they appear to be sleepwalkers, they have their consciousness totally asleep, they ambulate everywhere and firmly believe that they are alive. They ignore their death.

Yes, There Is a Hell, a Devil and Karma, 1973–74 also in Fascination

The dead person presented himself attired in a certain gray suit that he wore in life; he came laughing alone, he seemed truly somnambulist, he conversed nonsense, something that he had heard someone say... Useless were my efforts to make him recognize me; the wretched person slept profoundly; certainly he did not see me; in essence, he really perceived exclusively his own mental forms and laughed like a lunatic, like an idiot. Here we have two aspects that come to clarify then, the matter in question. That dead person projected his own mental forms, he dreamed them, he was absolutely fascinated with them and did not even perceive me.

Yes, There Is a Hell, a Devil and Karma, 1973–74 also in Fascination, Identification, Mental Effigies, The Keys of Astral Travel, The Language of Dreams

The defunct continue believing that they are alive because they have the consciousness asleep, and it takes a lot of work to make them believe that they no longer belong to the world of the living. Since they see all things absolutely the same way as they saw them in life, it is clear that they do not suspect that they have died.

Beyond Death also in The Consciousness

They can see it, but they do not recognize it because, since they have the consciousness asleep, they never believe that it is their own body, and they think that they are dealing with the body of another person.

Beyond Death also in Fascination

He also looked at me with the eyes of a sleepwalker; he understood not even one iota of what I was saying to him. I decided to float around him and over his head, to see if in that way maybe he would understand, but everything was useless: he understood nothing. He was asleep. The poor wretch had done nothing in life to awaken his Consciousness, and he continued to be asleep, with an asleep Consciousness.

IIWe will continue in the beyond as sleepwalkers

As the consciousness is in life, so it is after death and at the return. Those who did no work on themselves die asleep, find their stored knowledge of no use, and come back to a new womb unconscious.

Whoever wants to incarnate his soul must have an astral body, a mental body and a causal body. Humanity as yet does not have these vehicles. If we examine clairvoyantly the astral of any ordinary person we will see this astral as a ghost, cold and asleep. We really cannot give this astral ghost the name astral body. Whoever possesses an astral body lives awake in the internal worlds. People live asleep in the astral. When we invoke a disincarnated person we find them completely asleep. These astral ghosts speak of incoherent things and are full of cold and death.

Christmas Messages, 1952–66 also in Awakening, The Human Soul, The Intimate Christ, The Solar Bodies

Birth, life, death and the beyond as one round, each point in his words from passage 111, with the life from passage 110. The line underneath is his condition for the round to end.

Humanity lives during sleep and after death in the suprasensible regions of the great Mother Nature. Unfortunately, people act with their consciousness asleep while in the suprasensible worlds.

Endocrinology & Criminology, 1957 also in Awakening, The Consciousness

The astral ghost that mortals possess is nothing more than an outline of a man. It does not even have unity. This ghostly facade is a den of demons and of all kinds of filthy and abhorrent entities. Within this astral ghost lives the “I” (the Devil). This is an infernal legion. The “I” is Legion. Just as the body is composed of many atoms, so also the “I” is composed of millions of “I’s.” Diabolic intelligences, repugnant demons who quarrel amongst themselves. When a person dies he becomes just that: Legion. The person himself becomes dust. Only “that” remains alive; the legion of “I’s”. Clairvoyants usually meet the disincarnated dressed differently and appearing simultaneously in different places. The person seems to have become many people is legion. Nevertheless, when we have given birth within us to the Christic astral body, we continue after death living in that sidereal body. Then we are really immortal. Those people who possess the Christic astral body find after death that they have the consciousness awake. Ordinary disincarnated people live after death with the consciousness asleep. Death is really a return to fetal conception. Death is the return to the seed. Everyone who dies returns to a new maternal womb totally unconscious, asleep.

The Perfect Matrimony, 1950 (ed. 1961) also in Fascination, Return and Reincarnation, The Consciousness, The Many I’s, The Solar Bodies

The phantom of those who have still not dissolved the “I”, nor incarnated the Soul and the Spirit, lives in the internal worlds with the consciousness asleep. They only have subjective consciousness and perception.

Tarot and Kabbalah, 1978

When the totality of the “I have entered into the new body, then, we appear in the world with that horrible ugliness that characterizes all of us. We then wander like somnambulists everywhere, always unconscious, always perverse.

Treatise of Revolutionary Psychology, 1975–76

Death is profoundly significant. By discovering what death is in itself, we will know the secret of life. That which continues beyond the sepulcher can only be known by people with an awakened consciousness. You are asleep and, consequently, you do not know that which is beyond death. There are many theories. Each of us can make our own opinion, but what is important is to directly experience that which pertains to the mysteries beyond the grave. I can assure you that the souls of the defunct live within the ultra of this great nature.

Beyond Death also in The Consciousness

With the practice, the experience or the living of any of the works that I have delivered to humanity, the practitioner would achieve, it is obvious, psychological emancipation. There exist people that speak marvels about reincarnation, Atlantis, alchemy, the ego, astral unfoldment and before the external world they are experts on these matters, but this is only being intellectually informed. Deep down, these persons do not know anything and at the hour of death, these expositors remain with nothing but knowledge stored in their memory, that in the beyond does not serve any purpose because they continue with their consciousness asleep.

The Revolution of the Dialectic also in Memory, The Consciousness

Master: Well, if one disintegrates all those psychic aggregates that personify one’s errors, he awakens the Consciousness, and at the hour of disincarnating, he does it with full Consciousness, given that he awakened it during his lifetime. After death, people are in the supra-sensitive worlds with the Consciousness asleep because, during their lifetime, they never worried about awakening the Consciousness. Any other question?

The Fifth Gospel The Exercise of SELF-KNOWLEDGE also in Awakening, Fascination, The Consciousness

We must situate ourselves in the plane of the harshest realities. In no way have I come here with the purpose of being pessimistic, nor do I intend to fill your hearts with pessimism. I only wanted to put on the terrain of realities the psychological state in which each and every one of us finds himself. As long as we have not eliminated from our interior all those “I”-defects that we carry, our Consciousness will be profoundly asleep: we will die without knowing when; we will be born without knowing how or why; we will continue in the beyond as sleepwalkers, as ghosts. That is what our life has been like; thus it has been and thus it will be as long as we do not eliminate the “I”-defects from within ourselves.

IThey are millions of machines fighting against millions of machines

Wars are explained as cosmic vibrations striking sleeping human machines, which then march to the battlefields without knowing why. With ten percent of the consciousness awake, he says, there would be no wars.

Many times, any cosmic catastrophe is enough for the waves that reach the Earth to launch those asleep human machines to the battlefields. Millions of asleep machines... against millions of asleep machines.

Esoteric Treatise of Hermetic Astrology, 1967 also in Awakening, The Mechanical Man

Machines at war

one world collides with anothercertain types of vibrations toreach the planet EarthHuman machines capturethose vibrationsmillions of machines fighting against millions of machines, all unconscious, all asleepIf people had at least ten percent of Consciousness awake, there would be no wars in the world.
His account in passage 115, drawn from the top: worlds collide, the vibrations reach the Earth, the human machines take them up. The crowds are his words from passage 117; the closing line is passage 114.

What is it that we want with all this? To awaken consciousness; isn’t that so? That is the truth. That is what we want: to awaken. In the Oriental world they are not ignorant of the fact that people are asleep, no one is ignorant of it. But in the western world people believe that they are awake and nevertheless they do things that they do not want to do. They launch themselves into war, but they do not want to go to war, but they always go, even though they do not want to. Why? Because, they are hypnotized.

For the Few, 1977 also in Awakening, Fascination

Now you will understand the reason for the human unconsciousness. If people had at least ten percent of Consciousness awake, there would be no wars in the world. Unfortunately, humanity has only three percent of Consciousness awake. That means that ninety-seven percent of Consciousness sleeps profoundly.

The Fifth Gospel Analysis of the Human Psyche Public Lecture – 1977 also in Awakening, Fascination, The Consciousness

The human body is a machine, and we all look like machines. What is war, what are wars for? Many times, in the cosmos there is a catastrophe: one world collides with another, or a comet falls on a sun, etc., that is, any cosmic phenomenon is enough for certain types of vibrations to reach the planet Earth. Human machines capture those vibrations and then they launch themselves into war; millions of sleeping machines against millions of sleeping machines on the battlefields.

The Fifth Gospel Analysis of the Human Psyche Public Lecture – 1977 also in Fascination, The Mechanical Man

Many times, in the infinite cosmos, there is a clash of worlds –because sometimes the worlds collide, they have been able to see them with telescopes–. Just as our cars collide, so do the worlds of space, sometimes, they collide. They are frightful catastrophes. Figure for yourselves a clash of worlds, how terrible it will be... And then that force comes here, to our Earth, and what do the earthlings do? They receive it and immediately enter into activity: wars are declared, they go to the battlefields, they raise slogans for democracy, for peace, for I do not know what, for I do not know when, but they ignore what was that which sent them to war: it was nothing more than the vibration from a clash of worlds in space that touched them. That force touched them, then there are millions of human beings against millions on the battlefields; they are fighting and they do not know why, they are asleep. If they were awake, it is obvious that they would not be in that.

IINo one does that except the people who are asleep

Traffic deaths that never change, firemen walking into a dynamite store, a crowd standing under a falling cornice, a dictator who dreamt he was awakened, the crucifixion of the Christ: each is read as the work of people asleep.

Unquestionably these victims were due to curiosity; they were curious people, unconscious people, asleep, that after the first explosion had run to the location of the occurrence to gaze at the spectacle.

Yes, There Is a Hell, a Devil and Karma, 1973–74

A famous writer considered that the quantity of deaths due to accidents of transit (according to annual statistics) is equivalent to the millions of deaths in the 1st World War. This appears incredible but everything continues the same, nothing changes. The accidents continue daily without human society making even a minimum effort to stop them. To people this appears natural, even normal. In reality this is only possible in people that are asleep, indolent and cruel. We should recognize that human beings have not woken up yet. They have their consciousness asleep, only in this way can we explain why this barbarism doesn’t change. This shouldn’t, however, be an excuse to continue with this murder by accident. The time has arrived to COMPREHEND that we are cruel and heartless. When we PROFOUNDLY COMPREHEND that we are cruel and heartless then in a spontaneous form COMPASSION can arise within us.

The Social Christ also in Awakening, Compassion, Cruelty, Fascination, Gratitude and Kindness, Identification

This is the way of the world, full of people with their consciousness asleep. They live in a complete state of stupidity. No-one wants to see their cruelty and indolence.

The Social Christ also in Cruelty, Fascination

A man that is truly awake and truly responsible would do all in life except drive a car in the city streets. Only to the asleep, only to the negligent, would it occur to conduce a car among the human multitudes Really the city streets and the systems of transit and circulation are now outdated. It is stupid and absurd to mix the circulation of the multitudes with the circulation of vehicles. Human civilization becomes ridiculous when we see desperate people trying to cross the road, running from the killer wheel or groups of humans on corners pleading for an opportunity to cross the street. All of this is a lack of civilization, all of this shows a lack of culture in the peoples of the Earth, all of this shows a lack of intelligence. It would only occur to a madman or an idiot that all of this is good.

The Social Christ also in Awakening

Well, the Master was right. What will the people with the Consciousness asleep know about what they are doing? If those people had known that the one they were hanging on that log was the Son of God –the Christ, no less!– I am sure they would not have hung Him. But they did not even remotely suspect it, that is why they did not believe him. And why did they not suspect it? Because those poor people had the Consciousness asleep, bottled up among the “I’s”.

The Fifth Gospel Magic and Experimental Psychology Public Lecture – 1976 also in Awakening, Fascination, Identification, The Consciousness

There is no doubt that they were asleep, because you cannot explain that in another way. If they had had the Consciousness awake, they would have never gotten themselves in there, in the dynamite stockpiles. No one does that except the people who are asleep.

The Fifth Gospel Chaotic Consciousness and Intelligent Consciousness Public Lecture – Torreón, Coahuila, Mexico also in Fascination, Fear

The amazement is not in that. The amazement is in the pile of people that gathered at the place, which positioned themselves exactly below, like this, to look up at the place from where the pieces of stone had detached. That was what caused me amazement, not the accident because it can happen to anyone; but to position oneself below to look up... that cannot be but of the ones who are asleep. I assure you that an awakened one does not do that. I, at that moment, was perplexed, not by the accident, but by the state of unconsciousness in which people are. That cannot be of awakened people! Fortunately, no more pieces fell; otherwise it would have killed more people there.

If those who crucified him had been awakened, you can be absolutely sure that he would not have been crucified. What awakened person would dare to crucify the Lord of Glory? IIIWe do not know where we come from

Because the consciousness sleeps, people perceive three dimensions of seven and a millionth part of what happens around them. They cannot remember past lives or know what lies before birth and after death.

Ordinary people whose consciousness is asleep, perceive angles, lines, and surfaces subjectively, but never the complete bodies from inside and outside, from the top and from the bottom, from the front and from the back, etc. They can perceive the void aspect of things even less.

The Buddha's Necklace, 1967 also in Awakening, The Consciousness

The world has “Seven Dimensions”; however, the Intellectual Animal only perceives three because his Consciousness is asleep.

The Solar Bodies, 1968 also in Awakening, Fascination, The Consciousness

The human being, or better if we say, the poor intellectual animal mistakenly called man, has his consciousness completely asleep. Therefore, he certainly is incapable of vividly experiencing that which is not from time, that which is the Reality.

Runic Magic, 1969 also in Awakening, The Consciousness

People do not remember their previous lives because they have the consciousness asleep; if they had it awakened, it is clear that they would remember their past lives.

Beyond Death also in Memory, Return and Reincarnation, The Retrospective Exercise

The reality is that scientists neither know anything about Life nor Death, nor about where we come from nor where we are going, much less what the objective of existence is. Why? Simply because they have their consciousness asleep, because they have not done the interior Revolution of the Dialectic, because they are at the level of massive, collective hypnosis due to the lack of Integral Revolution that we teach in this Work. Materialistic science marches on the path of error; it knows nothing about the origin of man and much less about his inner psychology.

If we were awake, we could all see, hear, touch and feel the great realities of the superior worlds. We are sleeping people, unconscious, we do not know where we come from, where we are going to, or what is the purpose of our existence.

The Fifth Gospel Magic and Experimental Psychology Public Lecture – 1976 also in Awakening, Fascination

So, the harsh reality of the facts is that all people have their Consciousness asleep. If they had it awake, they would know where they were before birth. If you had it awake you would know what awaits you after death. But you do not know anything about that because your Consciousness is asleep.

This million phenomena, in fact, which happen around us are ignored by us. We only notice one in a million. Concrete physical phenomena, and yet, we ignore them. What can you tell me about this? So our Consciousness is fast asleep, isn’t it? It is stuck inside that whole bunch of people we carry inside.

The four Gospels insist on the necessity of awakening. If we were awake, we could see, hear, touch and feel the great realities of the superior worlds. If we were awake, life for us would be totally different: we would not be victims of circumstances, we could handle them at will. But we are truly not awake, we are profoundly asleep; we sleep deeply, we ignore that we ignore.

IVFrom the day they are born until they die

The last cost is a whole life passed asleep. Schooling and erudition leave the sleeper as he was, believers split into sects, the child grows into the adult he once looked at with horror, and the unconsciousness of parents and teachers is handed on.

Teachers and male and female students live with the consciousness asleep. They truly act like robots, going to school, college and university in an unconscious and subjective manner, without really knowing why or for what reason.

Fundamental Education, 1965 also in Awakening, Fascination, Identification

It is useless to fill our heads with more and more theories, and to quote Dante, Homer, Virgil, etc., if our consciousness is asleep, if we do not have a clear and objective consciousness about ourselves, about the subjects we study and about everyday life.

Fundamental Education, 1965 also in Fascination, Identification, The Consciousness

Gravest of all is that the student finishing school, though he has had intellectual preparation, does not have intelligence; his consciousness is asleep. He has insufficient preparation for life’s struggles.

Really, many sincere, devout Gnostics who are lovers of the Truth, fail due to the lamentable state of their sleeping consciousness.

If the devotees had full consciousness of the Christic gospel preached by the Great Kabir Jesus, it is obvious that so many sects would not exist; truly there would be only one Christic religion of a universal cosmic type. However, the believers are not able to agree among themselves because they have their consciousness asleep; they know nothing. Nothing is evident to them. They have never personally talked with an Angel; they have never consciously and positively entered the celestial regions. They walk because others walk, eat because others eat, talk because others talk, and in this manner they proceed from the cradle to the sepulcher with blindfolded eyes.

Usually, people, when facing life, do not receive the experiences directly in the Consciousness, no; they have a series of terrible preconceptions, prejudices in the mind. Any challenge is immediately shielded by some prejudices or preconceptions. Everything that happens in life does not reach the Consciousness directly, but rather all that multiplicity of prejudices that we have within, all that diversity of mistaken and contradictory feelings, but never the Consciousness and, as a consequence, we remain asleep our entire life.

On the other hand, we see on the path of life, amid the diverse schools and denominations, sects, orders, etc., people with heads filled with theories, individuals with rich erudition, but with a completely asleep Consciousness; learned ignoramuses who not only do not know, but what is worse, they do not even know that they do not know. Those get lost. Having fulfilled their one hundred and eight existences, they enter the submerged involution of the Infernal Worlds. But they think they are doing very well, that’s for sure; and when questioned, they demonstrate a surprising erudition: sparkling minds with flashing concepts, with luminous, convincing and definitive proverbs. But what is the use of all that to them?

And at last, when the one who was a child becomes an adult, things change: he is no longer that playful, self-conscious child of past times, no; now he is the scoundrel of the bar, the businessman, the lustful person, the jealous man, etc. In short, he has become that which the child looked at with horror. It is clear that the child is horrified upon seeing the adult; now the child has become an adult, and the worst part is that his Consciousness has fallen asleep, he is no longer able to look at himself with horror.

It is difficult for an individual to embrace the whole of the Teaching, due to the fact that he is hypnotized. The most serious thing is that he does not realize that he is in a state of hypnosis, that is what is most serious. I already explained to you what has happened with the Consciousness. Unfortunately, it now works with two systems instead of one. It happens that when we are born –as I told you in my previous conference– we bring all the data we need to become real men. But our parents, our relatives, our teachers at school, our friends, are in a state of unconsciousness that is projected into our psyche: all the fascinations from the state they are in, their lack of culture, their famous elementary [schools] that are worthless, their much-vaunted secondary [school], things of asleep people, etc.

Part Six — It is necessary to awaken consciousness

7 passages

ITo know that one is asleep

The first step is to know that one is asleep, and to know it in the consciousness, not only in the intellect. He compares it with the madman who begins to recover when he accepts that he is mad.

The first necessity, if one is to awaken consciousness, is to know that one is asleep. Understanding that we are asleep is difficult because normally, everybody is completely convinced that they are awake.

The Buddha's Necklace, 1967 also in Awakening, Fascination

Saying it, and knowing it

There is a great difference between the intellect and the Consciousness.recognizing that we are asleepthe intellectanyone can automaticallysay: “Yes, I am asleep”the Consciousnessto be conscious that he isasleepreally enters the path ofAwakening
The difference he draws in passage 150: one can say “I am asleep” with the intellect, or be conscious of it; only the second, in passage 147, enters the path of Awakening.

Before all else, it is necessary to comprehend that one is asleep; it is only when someone fully realizes that he is asleep that he really enters the path of Awakening.

Esoteric Treatise of Hermetic Astrology, 1967 also in Awakening

The four gospels insist on the necessity of awakening but people do not understand. People sleep profoundly, but they believe that they are awake; when someone accepts that he is asleep, it is a clear sign that he already begins to awaken.

Esoteric Treatise of Hermetic Astrology, 1967 also in Awakening, Fascination

But it is necessary to awaken. The four Gospels insist on the need to awaken, but we continue asleep. We do not know that we are asleep. If people knew that they have the Consciousness asleep, they would initiate the awakening.

The Fifth Gospel The Organization of our Inner World Public Lecture – 1975 also in Awakening, Fascination, Identification, The Consciousness

If we really want to awaken, we have to start by recognizing that we are asleep. When someone recognizes that he is asleep, it is a sure sign that he is already starting to awaken. But it is not about recognizing it intellectually, no; anyone can automatically say: “Yes, I am asleep”; another thing is to be conscious that he is asleep, and that is different. There is a great difference between the intellect and the Consciousness.

The Fifth Gospel Psychic Associations that Lead to Awakening Third Chamber – Mexico City – 1975 also in Awakening, Fascination, The Consciousness

First of all, it is necessary to convince ourselves sincerely that we are asleep. When one accepts that one is asleep, it is a sign or symptom that he wants to awaken. This is something very similar to the madman who is mad: no madman accepts that he is mad, all madmen think that they are very well. When an madman accepts that he is mad, it is an unequivocal sign that he is getting better. And you can see this clearly in the asylums: there is no madman who accepts that he is mad.

The Fifth Gospel Gnostic Discipline for Awakening Interview – Mexico City – 1970 also in Awakening, Fascination, Truthfulness

Observe in the asylums that those madmen who are almost ready to get out from the asylum accept that they are mad, they understand they are mad, and that is precisely the unequivocal sign that they are already getting notably better. The same happens with people who have their Consciousness asleep: they do not accept they are asleep; but when they accept it, it is an unequivocal signal that they want to awaken or that they begin to awaken.

IIWe need to come out of this hypnotic dream

The booklet closes with his passages that name the sleep and the need to wake in the same breath: the blind leading the blind, the disciples asleep in Gethsemane, the hypnotic sleep that old habits keep in place. How to wake is the subject of the booklet Awakening.

Therefore, it is indispensable for the dreamer to awake, it is urgent to awaken the consciousness. All the human beings travel in astral body during the hours of sleep, but they disgracefully live in the astral plane with the consciousness asleep. They are sleeping wanderers.

The Aquarian Message, 1960 also in Awakening, The Consciousness, The Keys of Astral Travel

It is necessary to awaken consciousness so as not to fall into the abyss of perdition. There now exist many leaders of esoteric groups with the consciousness soundly asleep, “the blind leading the blind; all will fall to the abyss.” That is the Law. The human being lives completely asleep. It is necessary to awaken consciousness so as to not walk blindly. The blind can fall into the abyss. Arcanum 16 is very dangerous.

Tarot and Kabbalah, 1978 also in Awakening

<< And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly; and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down upon the ground. And when he rose from prayer, he came to the disciples and found them sleep for sorrow (with the Consciousness asleep), and he said to them, "Why do you sleep? (Why do you have your Consciousness asleep?) Rise and pray that you may not enter into temptation."

The Three Mountains, 1972–73 also in Awakening, Fascination, Identification, Prayer in the Work

We need to come out of this hypnotic dream. That is true, but how are we going to come out of this hypnotic sleep? If we are content with our mental habits, with our system of reasoning, with our sentimental habits, with our distinct customs acquired by heredity and from family, then, even though we are listening to the teachings, here, in this room, we are simply wasting time.

For the Few, 1977 also in Awakening, Fascination

Therefore, the human Consciousness is asleep. What is needed is to wake up? Of course, it is needed to get out of that state of unconsciousness in which one finds himself. If you had the Consciousness awake, you could see, hear, touch the great mysteries of life and death, but you are asleep. What year were you born?

The Fifth Gospel Chaotic Consciousness and Intelligent Consciousness Public Lecture – Torreón, Coahuila, Mexico also in Fascination, Identification, The Consciousness

Above all, we should be interested in awakening, because as long as we continue asleep as we are, what will we be able to know about the mysteries of life and death? What will we be able to know about the real, about the truth? For one to be able to get to know the mysteries of life and death thoroughly, it is indispensably necessary to awaken. It is possible to awaken if one sets out to do it; but it is not possible to awaken if the Consciousness continues to be bottled up among all those ”I’s”.

The Fifth Gospel The Exercise of SELF-KNOWLEDGE also in Awakening, Fascination, The Consciousness

First of all, we need to awaken in order to know how we are going to orient ourselves. What would be the use for us to have our heads filled with words, if we continue with our Consciousness asleep? It would be better to be illiterate, but awakened.

The Fifth Gospel Psychic Associations that Lead to Awakening Third Chamber – Mexico City – 1975 also in Fascination, Identification, The Consciousness

Well, continuing along the path of this dissertation, we see the need that we have to awaken from this hypnotic sleep. It takes some effort for people to understand this, because there is a very strong tendency to believe that we are awakened.

The Fifth Gospel Practical Solutions Against Collective Hypnotism Third Chamber – Mexico City – 1976 also in Awakening

So, the state in which we find ourselves is truly regrettable. And if we do not revolutionize against ourselves, if we do not fight against ourselves, then it will not be possible to wake up from the hypnotic sleep in which we find ourselves.

The Fifth Gospel Practical Solutions Against Collective Hypnotism Third Chamber – Mexico City – 1976 also in Awakening, Fascination, The Kundabuffer

The youth, then, should not continue being bottled up in that process of reasoning; it must be eminently intuitive. Above all, it is necessary to understand that we are asleep. But one cannot awaken as long as he lives completely falsified by mechanistic life, with the various little roles that he has to play in existence. There is a need, I repeat, to no longer identify with these little roles, to break free from them by being rebels, by looking at life from another angle.

How this was made. All fifty-two books were extracted (73,105 paragraphs, 2,157,671 words) and swept on his words for it: the sleep of the consciousness by name, and the consciousness asleep, dormant or sleeping; humanity, people and the multitudes asleep; the collective hypnosis; dreaming while awake, the dreamers and the somnambulists; the abominable organ and the bottled Essence where he draws the sleep from them; and the four states of consciousness. The sleeping serpent, the body asleep in bed, and hypnotism as a technique were set aside as false friends. Introduction to Gnosis was left out, by the editor’s ruling. The paragraph either side of every core paragraph was taken too. That returned 578 candidate paragraphs in 41 books. Every candidate was read twice, by independent readers working from a written brief. The two passes agreed on whether to print 95.2% of the time and on the class 91.3%, and a third reader, who saw neither verdict, settled the 28 disagreements. 264 were judged printable. This is a slim book by the editor’s choice, so 96 of them were set aside as the same teaching said again, kept where he says it most plainly, and 6 were joined into the passage before them, where his sentence ran across several short paragraphs, so 162 passages are printed here. The rest are recorded with the reason each was set aside.

What was set aside. 37 were greetings, dates, editors’ notes or narrative, 69 were false friends (the words in their ordinary sense: the body’s sleep, dreams at night, hypnotism as a technique), 27 named the subject only in passing, 41 belonged to another built work, above all Awakening, and 12 were neighbours on another subject. 34 more were judged and not printed, and 94 were judged the second halves of sentences begun in the paragraph before.

No sentence of his is cut in half. Each range was extended against the corpus until his sentence closed, a passage that turned out to be the second half of the one before it was absorbed into it, and 31 ranges run over more than one paragraph.

150 passages also stand in a finished work, and every one is marked where it stands, the most in Awakening (108), Fascination (92) and The Consciousness (71). The editor ruled that this work prints in full and that shared passages print here too. An overlap is allowed wherever the teaching needs it. What is not allowed is an overlap a reader cannot see.

Checked against the source. Every passage was proved word for word against the raw extraction of its own book, and the printed text against the paragraphs it joins, with no failures. The mends are listed: six words the scanner had broken in two were joined, the apostrophe that the file of The Social Christ misreads was put back in four words, and in the Christmas Messages a running head that the scan had set inside one of his sentences was taken out. Every other printed word stands as the source has it.

No editor’s notes. The doctrine search over his passages and over every word of ours found the Kundalini or the serpent named in three passages, and none says what awakens it: in Tarot and Kabbalah he names the Kundalini to set it apart from the blind force that keeps people hypnotized, and in the Fifth Gospel the serpent that rises is set against the one that descends and hypnotizes humanity.

A work of The Psychology, the first of its part on the sleep of the consciousness, before Fascination, Identification and Awakening. Fascination and identification as mechanisms, and waking and its practices, belong to those works; they appear here where he names the sleep as their fruit. It wears The Psychology’s ash and the themed works’ two hairlines, in the dusk of the hour before sleep.
